A trial date has been set for Martin Wainwright, 54, who is charged with the murder of fellow inmate Raymond McEntee at HMP Altcourse.
McEntee, 68, was found dead in his cell at the prison in the early hours of July 18. A Home Office post-mortem examination gave the cause of death as pressure to the neck and blunt force trauma to the head, according to a police spokesperson.
Court appearances
Wainwright, who was also a prisoner at HMP Altcourse at the time of the alleged incident, was charged with murder on Thursday, July 30, and appeared in court the following day.
He appeared again on Monday for a bail determination hearing before Judge Neil Flewitt KC. Damian Nolan, defending Wainwright, who appeared via video link from HMP Liverpool wearing a green and yellow prison issue jumpsuit, told the court there was no application for bail.
Trial details
A provisional trial date was set for January 25 next year, with the trial expected to last between seven and 10 days. A plea and trial preparation hearing was also set for October 23, pending psychiatric reports.
Judge Flewitt KC told Wainwright: "I have set a provisional trial date for the January 25 next year and the next hearing in this case is on October 23 this year. You will attend over the prison video link in the same way you have done today."
