Three people have died in a two-vehicle crash in Sydney’s south after a man fled from police who were conducting a welfare check. The incident occurred in Sans Souci early on Saturday morning.
Police were called to a property in Gymea Bay at around 12.25am for a concern for welfare, described by Superintendent Graham Hibbs as a mental health incident. Upon arrival, a 42-year-old man drove away in a white Audi.
Shortly afterwards, the Audi collided with a blue Toyota sedan after rolling over a concrete barrier about 7km away. The driver of the Audi and the two occupants of the Toyota died at the scene. The Toyota’s occupants have not yet been formally identified.
Superintendent Hibbs described the scene as “horrific” and said the Audi was travelling at “considerable speed”. Between 20 and 40 bystanders attempted to assist after one of the cars caught fire. Drugs and alcohol are being investigated as part of the inquiry.
