Pro-Palestine activist Daniel Day, 30, has been handed a 14-month prison sentence suspended for two years after climbing Big Ben barefoot and sitting on the London landmark for 17 hours, causing major disruption and costing taxpayers at least £92,000.
Protest and emergency response
Day scaled the Elizabeth Tower on March 8 last year, triggering a major emergency services response and road closures around Westminster. He refused to come down and livestreamed his protest on Instagram while chanting “Free Palestine”.
Sentencing
On Monday, he was sentenced by Judge Tony Baumgartner, the Recorder of Westminster, who told him: “This was well-planned offending and you knew precisely what you were doing. Foolishly you climbed a far way up the tower, far enough to cause very serious harm to you and possibly others if you fell.”
