The body of Makala Pendley, a pregnant mother who went missing with her seven children four months ago, has been found dead by the side of a road in Mexico.
Discovery and Cause of Death
Pendley's body was discovered on a dirt road in the Zanicantan area of Chiapas, Mexico, on June 8. Initial findings indicate she died from a traumatic brain injury caused by blunt-force trauma. Her body is believed to have been dumped between eight and 12 hours before it was found by officials.
Background of the Case
The 30-year-old woman and her children were reported missing by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department in February. Her sister, Maurica Lambert, said Pendley had told local outlets she was at least six months pregnant at the time she vanished. The family had traveled more than 2,000 miles from Indiana to Chiapas.
Children in Protective Custody
Chiapas state prosecutor Jorge Luis Llaven Abarca confirmed that the children are under the protection of authorities while arrangements are made with the United States Embassy for relatives to take custody. The children had been found by Mexican authorities last month and were initially released to Pendley.
Partner Arrested
Pendley's partner, identified only as Joseph "N," has been arrested and is being held in custody. Abarca stated he is the main suspect in the case.
Family Tributes
Maurica Lambert described her sister as a good mother who always put her children first. Cousin Jami Dowdy remembered Pendley's laughter and bright eyes, emphasizing the family's priority is bringing the children back to Indianapolis to be raised by loving relatives. Lambert confirmed that her nieces and nephews will return to Indianapolis along with their mother's body.
