Devon and Cornwall Police have launched a murder investigation following the death of former MP Ann Widdecombe, who was found deceased with serious injuries at her home in Haytor, Dartmoor. The 78-year-old former Tory minister, who later switched to the Brexit Party and Reform UK, was discovered at around 11:40 am on Thursday, 9 July, after the ambulance service alerted police.
Police Confirm Murder Investigation Underway
In a statement, Detective Chief Inspector Ilona Rosson confirmed the murder enquiry is in its early stages but moving at a significant pace. Officers are deploying all necessary resources to locate the person responsible, whom they believe to be a white male. Rosson urged the public to come forward with any information, however insignificant it may seem.
A cordon remains in place at Widdecombe's property while specialist officers conduct forensic examinations. Road closures are in effect around the scene, and a significant police presence will be visible in the area as house-to-house and CCTV enquiries are carried out.
Details of the Incident
Widdecombe's next-of-kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained officers. The coroner's office for Devon, Plymouth and Torbay confirmed that preliminary inquiries are ongoing. Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood described the circumstances as extremely distressing and offered condolences to Widdecombe's family.
Widdecombe's agent confirmed her death earlier in the day, stating: "It is with great sadness that today we announce the death of the Rt Hon Ann Widdecombe, DSG. We send our deepest condolences to Ann's family and friends. We ask that the family's wish not to be contacted at this sad time is respected."
Police Appeal for Information
Detectives are particularly keen to hear from anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the vicinity of Haytor Vale, Haytor, or anyone with CCTV, doorbell, or dashcam footage that could assist the investigation. A Major Incident Public Portal has been set up for information, images, or footage to be submitted. The public can also contact police on 101 or through the website, quoting reference 50260179119 and Operation Hunlen. Information can be passed anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
Assistant Chief Constable Matt Longman is scheduled to deliver a press briefing at Police Headquarters in Middlemoor, Exeter at 4:30 pm, where he will provide a statement and take questions.
