Two of the three killers of Pc Andrew Harper, Cole and Bowers, are set to be released halfway through their 13-year sentences. Government to exempt serious criminals from early release
The announcement was made by Angela Rayner, who confirmed that the Government will take action to ensure that those convicted of the most serious offences, including the killers of Pc Harper, will not benefit from the early release scheme.
The decision comes after public outcry over the potential release of Cole and Bowers, who were sentenced to 13 years for their roles in the death of the Thames Valley Police officer.
Parliament to return in September
The Justice Secretary is expected to outline the details of the exemption when Parliament reconvenes in September. The move is seen as a response to concerns that the current early release scheme could allow dangerous criminals to be freed prematurely.
