Former AFL player Nicky Winmar has been found guilty of assault following an incident in Victoria. The 58-year-old was convicted at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Friday for assaulting a woman in March 2024.
Court Proceedings
The court heard that Winmar pushed the woman during an argument at a home in St Kilda. The victim suffered minor injuries but did not require hospital treatment. Winmar had pleaded not guilty to the charge, claiming he acted in self-defence.
Magistrate Peter Reardon rejected Winmar's defence, stating that the evidence showed Winmar was the aggressor. "The use of force was not reasonable in the circumstances," he said.
Impact and Sentencing
The conviction adds to Winmar's legal troubles. He was previously convicted of assault in 2022 and placed on a good behaviour bond. The court has adjourned sentencing for a pre-sentence report. Winmar faces up to two years in jail.
Outside court, the victim's lawyer said the verdict was a "vindication" for her client. Winmar's lawyer indicated they would consider an appeal.
