Newcastle woman refused to face court over city centre disorder

A woman who threw shop signs and drinks glasses around Newcastle City Centre while shouting abuse at passers-by refused to come into court to face the charges. Long-time offender Cherise Haglington's disorderly behaviour came to the attention of police when council cameras captured her in Newcastle.

Officers attended and saw the 23-year-old throwing objects at street rangers, going in and out of shops and shouting abuse. She was arrested and found to be carrying cannabis.

Earlier incident damaged officer's glasses

Newcastle Magistrates' Court heard that, five months earlier, Haglington had been arrested for a separate matter and damaged an officer's glasses by pulling them from her face and bending the arms and frames. Haglington, formerly of Hawthorn Road, in Ashington, but now of no fixed abode, was arrested this week and was due in the dock in custody but refused to leave her cell.

In her absence, her solicitor, Kyle Patterson, pleaded guilty to a public order offence, possession of a class B drug, criminal damage and failing to adhere to a section 35 direction from a police officer. Clare Haswell, prosecuting, said Haglington committed the damage on the officer's glasses on May 25.

Council cameras spotted disorder

Miss Haswell continued: "Then, on October 26, council cameras reported to police that a female had been acting in a disorderly manner in the city centre. She was identified as Cherise Haglington and she was throwing objects around in the street, including shop signs and drink glasses from tables outside licenced premises."

"She was throwing them at street rangers. She was also going in and out of shops whilst being abusive, shouting and throwing objects." The court heard that Haglington was arrested and found to be in possession of cannabis.

Mr Patterson, defending, said: "She does have significant mental health issues and she isn't medicated at the moment. She is also homeless at the moment."

Haglington was fined £100 and ordered to pay £50 compensation to the police officer.
