NATO Jets Shoot Down Drone Threat in Latvia Airspace

NATO fighter jets were scrambled on June 8 after Latvia reported a potential threat entering its airspace, prompting local authorities to urge residents to "be prepared" and "take shelter" in parts of the country.

Alert Issued for Eastern Municipalities

The National Armed Forces of Latvia (NBS) issued a warning covering Ludza, Balvi, and Alūksne municipalities around 9:20 local time. A cell broadcast alert instructed locals to stay vigilant. The NBS posted on X: "POSSIBLE AIR THREAT IN THE LUDZA, BALVI AND ALŪKSNE MUNICIPALITIES. BE PREPARED! We inform you that there is a possible threat in Latvia's airspace. No further action is required at this time. If the situation changes, you will receive a cell broadcast notification about the required action."

Drone Shot Down by French Rafale Jets

The threat, reportedly a drone with unconfirmed origins from Russia or Belarus, was successfully shot down by NATO jets. The NBS later confirmed: "Allied fighter jets have successfully shot down a drone that entered Latvia's airspace!" A French flag on the post indicated French Rafale fighter jets from NATO's Baltic Air Policing Mission were involved. This incident is the latest involving drones from the conflict zone in Russia and Ukraine.

Recent Drone Incident in Romania

This event follows a Ukrainian maritime drone explosion at a Black Sea port in Romania. On June 5, a drone self-detonated in the port of Constanta after the area was secured by Romanian authorities. Three other sea drones exploded outside the port. No injuries were reported. The Romanian government stated that Ukraine confirmed losing control of four drones due to Russian electronic warfare, likely jamming. Romanian President Nicusor Dan said the incursion was a direct consequence of Russia's war against Ukraine. The Ukrainian Navy confirmed losing control of an unmanned naval boat while performing tasks in the Black Sea operational zone.
