A letter writer has raised concerns about the principle that ministers should not be involved in individual criminal cases, following reports that Andy Burnham could block the early release of PC Andrew Harper's killers.
Ministerial interference questioned
Mark de Brunner from Burn Bridge, North Yorkshire, asked: "Do we really want specific imprisonment decisions based on populist pressure?" He expressed concern that more people are not upholding the principle that ministers should be kept clear from involvement in individual cases.
Trump's comments on Infantino
In another letter, Michael Crapper from Whitchurch, Hampshire, noted that Donald Trump thinks it would be a "terrible mistake" to get rid of Gianni Infantino. Crapper pointed out that Trump said something similar about Viktor Orbán, and joked about sending JD Vance to help with the re-election campaign, referencing the situation in Hungary.
Heatwave working conditions
Jude Carr from London highlighted the need for better working conditions during heatwaves, sympathizing with nurses, firefighters, and others. Carr noted that footballers took hydration breaks 20 minutes into their shifts during the World Cup, even in air-conditioned stadiums, while others working in extreme heat did not have such provisions.
