A Merseyside man is due in court for an extradition hearing later this year after an international arrest warrant was issued by a Spanish court. Sonny Redmond was previously due to stand trial in Liverpool for being in possession of a knife and phone while serving a previous sentence in HMP Liverpool.
However, the case was discontinued by the Crown Prosecution Service, and while in custody he was arrested in connection with the Spanish arrest warrant. Redmond, 33 and originally from Bootle, appeared before Westminster Magistrates' Court on June 11 this year, with a final extradition hearing due to take place on October 26 this year.
Background and arrest
The warrant is believed to have been issued after Redmond allegedly broke his bail conditions in the European country. The ECHO understands Redmond had been residing in the Costa Blanca area of Spain, known to be a British expat hotspot, although it is unclear how long he had been living in the country.
A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm a man was arrested in June in connection with an arrest warrant issued by Spanish authorities. The 33-year-old man from Merseyside was arrested while in custody for an unrelated matter. He appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court on 11 June for the commencement of extradition proceedings to Spain. He has been remanded into custody to appear in court at a later date."
