Man Kicks Woman at Baby Shower, Brandishes Knife

A baby shower in Bodmin descended into terror when 22-year-old Harvey Rouen, from Saltash, Plymouth, violently attacked a woman and brandished a knife at attendees. The incident occurred on 30 August last year at a pub, where Rouen had attended the event with his girlfriend.

Violent Outburst at Baby Shower

What began as a joyful occasion quickly turned sour as Rouen's behavior deteriorated. During what was initially a 'play-fight' with one of the women present, he suddenly became aggressive, shouting and then repeatedly punching and kicking her. The assault continued as Rouen pursued two women who had fled to another bar in town. Footage shown in court captured him kicking one woman in the stomach and repeatedly punching another at the entrance as he tried to force his way inside.

Knife Threat and Arrest

The situation escalated further when the woman's father arrived to intervene. Rouen pulled a knife from his pocket and threatened him with it. Police were called, and Rouen was arrested and charged with affray and possession of a knife in a public place. He pleaded guilty to both charges at the earliest opportunity.

In a victim impact statement, the attacked woman said the ordeal left her shaken and terrified that Rouen would stab her father, adding that she feels constantly 'on edge'.

Defense and Sentencing

Defending barrister Harriet Summerhayes told Truro Crown Court on Friday (5 June) that Rouen has no prior convictions and fully accepts 'the unpleasant nature of his offending and how terrifying it would have been for people that day'. She described him as a young man with genuine prospects for rehabilitation, noting the incident was out of character. Summerhayes stated that Rouen's childhood was 'filled with things no-one should have to experience', which has impacted his behavior. He has ADHD but holds down a job, has stable accommodation, and hopes to start his own landscaping business. 'Prison would unsettle his life,' she added.

His Honour Recorder Charles Murray told Rouen his actions had ruined the day for everyone, stating: 'It must have been a terrifying thing for the people to go through. There were plenty of opportunities for you to remove yourself from the scene. But you didn't and it escalated.'

Recorder Murray imposed a 12-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, along with 10 rehabilitation days, mental health requirement activities, and 100 hours of unpaid work.
