A man accused of killing a Scottish charity worker and placing her body in a suitcase has appeared in court in Athens. Sharif Ahmadzai, 26, is suspected of killing Elisabeth-Jane Ross, 38, whose body was found in a derelict building in the Kypseli area on July 18.
Charges and allegations
Ahmadzai, an Afghan boxer, initially faced weapons charges but now faces murder and theft charges, accused of stealing over €10,000 from Ross's bank accounts. He allegedly told police he found Ross dead and moved her body to steal the money unnoticed.
He is also accused of buying a burner phone and sending messages to his wife, friends, and himself to cover his tracks, allegedly impersonating a jihadist and claiming he killed Ross over her religion.
Investigation details
His wife, Alaina Hall, reportedly suspected his involvement and tracked his phone to Ross's location. Ross is believed to have died five to seven days before discovery, during a heatwave with temperatures reaching 36°C, and was identified by fingerprints.
Known as Lisa, Ross volunteered with local NGOs and often spoke with homeless people in Athens. Greek officials say Ahmadzai admitted moving the body but denied murder. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office expressed condolences and said they are providing consular support.
