A man in his 40s has tragically died after being struck by a car on the M53 motorway in the early hours of Monday morning. Police have revealed that the man had been involved in a separate collision moments before the incident.
Details of the Incident
Emergency services were called to Junction 4 at Clatterbridge, Wirral, at approximately 3:25am on June 15 following reports that a Toyota Yaris had hit a pedestrian on the northbound carriageway. The man was pronounced dead at the scene. Merseyside Police confirmed that his next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained Family Liaison Officers.
The driver of the Toyota stopped at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. Officers later established that the man had been involved in an earlier incident on the southbound carriageway, where the Skoda Fabia he was driving collided with the central reservation.
Road Closures and Investigation
The M53 remains closed in both directions between Junction 4 and Junction 5 while collision investigators conduct enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Detective Sergeant Andy Roper from the MATRIX Serious Collision Investigation Unit expressed his condolences and urged witnesses to come forward.
“My thoughts are with the man’s family at this tragic time, and specially trained officers are supporting them. An investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances of what happened. Although this occurred in the early hours of the morning, we are still appealing for witnesses who may have information.”
Appeal for Dashcam Footage
Detective Sergeant Roper added: “If you were travelling on the M53, in either direction, between Junction 4 (Clatterbridge) and Junction 5 (Eastham), please check your front or rear dash cameras, even if you didn’t witness anything. Sometimes important footage is captured without the driver realising it, and this could prove vital to our enquiries.”
Road closures will remain in place on both sides of the motorway while investigators work to provide answers for the man’s family. Motorists are advised to find alternative routes and avoid the area.
