A man has been charged with five counts of attempted murder after allegedly driving through a pedestrian crossing in west London, sending multiple victims 'projected into the air' and causing serious injuries including broken facial bones and a broken pelvis, a court has heard.
Incident Details
Somalia-born Ahmed Timir, 34, of Grange Park, Ealing, is accused of driving a white Seat Leon through a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing on Ealing Broadway, Ealing, on Saturday. According to prosecutor Kate Fassam-Wright, speaking at Willesden Magistrates' Court on Monday, the traffic light was red and a large number of pedestrians were lawfully crossing when Timir accelerated, undertook stationary traffic on the near side, and drove directly through the crossing, striking multiple individuals.
Several victims were projected into the air, suffering serious injuries including broken facial bones and a broken pelvis, the court heard.
Aftermath and Arrest
After the initial impact, the defendant allegedly continued driving and crashed with stationary traffic at a junction, including a Toyota Corolla and a Toyota Prius. He then drove away, and a witness reported a white vehicle colliding with his car at the junction of Hanger Lane and Uxbridge Road. The vehicle was eventually stopped on Warwick Road. Emergency services attended and treated multiple casualties. Timir was later located and arrested at an address that same day, the prosecution said.
Charges and Court Appearance
In addition to the five counts of attempted murder, Timir faces charges of dangerous driving, two counts of failing to stop, failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis, and three counts of criminal damage. Counter Terrorism Policing London conducted initial inquiries but confirmed the incident is not being treated as terrorism.
Timir, wearing a grey T-shirt, only spoke to confirm his identity during the hearing. He was remanded into custody by chair of the bench Caroline Walsh and is scheduled to appear at the Old Bailey on July 27.
