Daniel Ellison, 24, appeared at Newcastle Magistrates' Court charged with one count of assault by beating and one count of sexual assault. The charges relate to an incident in The Bigg Market, Newcastle City Centre, on February 22.
Ellison, formerly of Houghton-le-Spring but now of Tudor Court, Watford, pleaded not guilty to both offences. He was arrested on the same night as the alleged incident.
Alleged assault details
Prosecutor Chike Anieto told the court: "This matter is suitable for trial in these courts and I would invite you to accept jurisdiction. The offences are alleged to have happened in the Bigg Market."
Anieto added: "The defendant is accused of slapping the bottom of a lady. Having done that, he was confronted by her friend of hers and the defendant has allegedly punched that friend."
Arrest and interview
Following the incident, Ellison was arrested by police after the complainants reported what had happened to officers in the vicinity. In interview, he said he could not recollect the events as he was drunk.
Magistrates accepted jurisdiction and the case was listed for trial at South East Northumberland Magistrates' Court on October 30. Ellison was released on unconditional bail.
