Albert Williams, 66, has appeared in court charged with the murder of 41-year-old Charlene Dowsell, who was found dead in Newport city centre after suffering a stab wound to the back.
Court Appearance
Williams appeared at Cardiff Crown Court on Tuesday morning. He spoke only to confirm his name and date of birth and did not enter a plea.
Police responded to reports of an altercation in the early hours of Saturday outside a property on St Vincent Road, near Rodney Parade sports ground. Firearms officers attended, and Ms Dowsell was pronounced dead by paramedics a short distance away near Chepstow Road.
Details of the Incident
In an earlier hearing at Newport Magistrates' Court, the court heard that Ms Dowsell was discovered by police having suffered a single stab wound to the back. She had withdrawn the knife herself and attempted to leave the scene but then collapsed and died in the street.
Williams, of Ruperra Street in Newport, was remanded in custody by the Recorder of Cardiff Judge Tracey Lloyd-Clarke until his next court date on August 20. A provisional trial date has been set for January 4.
Police Appeal
Detective Superintendent Matt Sedgebeer said on Sunday: "Our enquiries are ongoing and we continue to have a significant police presence in the area. I ask anyone with any information that can help the investigation to contact us."
He added: "One man has now been charged with murder and with this in mind I'd ask people not to speculate about this case online while the legal process takes its course. Such comments can have an impact on our ability to bring anyone found to have committed a criminal offence to justice."
