The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has announced that Gary Glitter, the former singer whose real name is Paul Gadd, has been charged with historic sexual offences against a child. The 82-year-old faces one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 and three counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14. The charges relate to alleged offences that took place between 1978 and 1981.
Details of the Charges
Bethan David, Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor in CPS London, stated: "The Crown Prosecution Service has decided to prosecute Paul Gadd with one count of unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under 13 and three counts of indecent assault on a girl under 14." She added that the decision followed allegations made by a woman concerning a period of alleged abuse spanning 1978 to 1981.
Prosecutors have determined that there is sufficient evidence to bring the case to court and that it is in the public interest to proceed. The CPS worked closely with the Metropolitan Police during their investigation into the allegations.
Legal Context and Fair Trial Reminder
David emphasized: "The Crown Prosecution Service reminds everyone that proceedings are now active, and the defendant has the right to a fair trial. It is vital that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice these proceedings."
Gary Glitter is a former glam rock star who was previously convicted of child sexual offences in 2015 and served time in prison. The new charges mark a further legal development in his history of sexual abuse cases.
