Police confirm identities of victims
Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that the two people who died following an incident at Fistral Beach in Newquay were a father and daughter, both from Doncaster. The man was in his 60s and the woman in her 30s.
Police were alerted by the South Western Ambulance Service at approximately 9.45pm on Sunday, 26 July, after two people were pulled from the water. Coastguard rescue teams from Newquay, Padstow and St Agnes attended, along with Newquay RNLI lifeboats and a HM Coastguard helicopter.
Emergency services respond
Despite the efforts of emergency services, the father and daughter were pronounced dead at the scene. Their families have been notified, and police said their thoughts remain with them during this devastating time. A file will be prepared for HM Coroner.
The force extended its gratitude to all emergency service personnel and members of the public who assisted in responding to the incident.
Appeal for sentimental bag
The woman is believed to have entered the water carrying a handbag described as orange or peach in colour with a shoulder strap. The leather-style bag, measuring approximately 30cm by 30cm, is thought to contain personal items of great sentimental value to her loved ones.
Police said the family would find great comfort in having these belongings returned. Anyone who finds a bag matching this description is urged to hand it in to Newquay Police Station or contact police, quoting incident number 50260197209.
