A driver plowed into pedestrians in the northern Italian city of Modena on Saturday, leaving eight people injured, four of whom are in critical condition. The 31-year-old suspect drove onto a pavement and crashed into a shop window before attempting to flee the scene. He was detained by authorities.
Critical Injuries and Response
One woman sustained critical injuries, requiring the amputation of both legs. Other victims were transported to hospitals in Modena and Bologna for treatment. Witnesses reported that the driver was holding a knife during the incident.
Investigation Underway
Authorities are questioning the driver to determine whether the act was deliberate or if he was under the influence of substances. Italian Premier Giorgia Meloni condemned the 'extremely serious' incident, thanking citizens who intervened and calling for full accountability for the suspect.
