A married doctor who Lucy Letby called her "best friend" and "love" in notes found at her home has died. The registrar, known as Doctor A during the trial, testified against Letby, 36, who was convicted of murdering seven babies and attempting to murder seven others at the Countess of Chester Hospital.
Relationship with Letby
The doctor worked with Letby in 2016, two years before her first arrest. Investigators found that Letby referred to him as her "love" in personal writings, and the pair exchanged over 1,300 Facebook messages over three months in 2016.
During the trial, prosecutors described him as Letby's "boyfriend" and said she was infatuated with him. They argued she created "crisis situations" by harming infants, knowing he would be among the doctors called to respond. The pair also went on day trips to London and arranged walks and meals together. Letby denied any romantic connection, insisting they were just close friends.
Death and Aftermath
The Sun reports that the doctor, in his 50s, had been unwell before his death last month. His funeral has taken place, according to the Express. He had received anonymity protection during the 10-month trial in 2023 to safeguard his family.
During the trial, it was revealed Letby called him "sweetie" in messages, and she was seen crying when he arrived at Manchester Crown Court to testify. The Thirlwall Inquiry in 2024 found that the doctor had been "misled" and "maybe manipulated" by Letby, and he claimed she had deceived him into providing information about babies she had assaulted.
Letby is serving a whole-life term at Bronzefield Prison in Surrey. She continues to maintain her innocence despite her convictions.
