The Idaho Murders: College Nightmare, a three-part true crime docu-series on Netflix, examines the horrific deaths of four college students in November 2022. Madison Mogen, Kaylee Goncalves, Xana Kernodle and Ethan Chapin were fatally stabbed after a night out at an off-campus house in Moscow, Idaho.
Investigation and Arrest
DNA analysis of a knife sheath led investigators to Bryan Kohberger, a Washington State University graduate. Mobile phone data revealed he made several trips near the King Road residence during late-night hours. Netflix reported investigators believed the crime was premeditated and meticulously planned.
Guilty Plea and Sentencing
Kohberger pleaded guilty to all charges and received four consecutive life sentences without parole, avoiding the death penalty. The 31-year-old is currently serving his sentence at the Idaho Maximum Security Institution.
Attempt to Withdraw Plea
On Sunday, July 26, Kohberger announced he is seeking to withdraw his guilty plea, filing a petition challenging his conviction. He claims actual innocence and desires a trial. In a statement, he said: "My actual innocence is my truth, and the plea, hinged on by false promises and blatant disinformation, MUST be withdrawn."
The family of victim Kaylee Goncalves responded, comparing him to a "mosquito you just can't seem to swat." Their statement continued: "The real tragedy is this: if even a fraction of the energy spent trying to free a guilty man were directed toward honouring the victims, there would be statues of them on every corner, parks bearing their names, and days set aside to remember the lives they lost at the hands of a narcissist."
