A British teenager who died while on holiday with his family at a luxury Bali resort desperately cried for help as he got into trouble at sea, an inquest has heard.
Mitchell Ogbourne, 19, went out for a swim on October 13 while staying with his family at the Nusa Dua resort in southern Bali. The teen, an inquest held in Salisbury, Wiltshire, heard, had believed the sea was calm and shallow when he ventured out that day, before complications arose.
His parents were alerted to their son's difficulties after they heard his screams from the shore, and they rushed out to haul him back. Hours later the teen was confirmed dead.
Parents' rescue attempt
The Salisbury inquest heard that his parents, Lisa and Paul, swam out and dragged their son back before administering CPR on the beach. The teen was then rushed to hospital, where he was pronounced dead that evening.
The family, from Swindon, had been enjoying their dream holiday abroad in the southeast Asian nation when the disaster struck. His body was later repatriated, with a post-mortem examination confirming that the teen had died of water submersion.
Tributes from football club
Tributes have since poured in for Mitchell, who was a part of Stratton Juniors Football Club in Swindon. The club wrote in a post on social media that both the teen and his dad had been a part of the team's family "for many years".
Representatives said in the memorial post: "Mitch and his dad, Paul, have been part of the Stratton Juniors family for many years. During that time, they have built friendships and memories that extend far beyond the football pitch. Mitch leaves behind many friends and former teammates who remain part of our club, including within our senior section. There are simply no words to express the sadness we feel."
The post added: "To lose someone so young, with so much life ahead of them, is truly heartbreaking. Mitch was a wonderful young man who was loved, liked and valued by so many. His loss will be felt deeply throughout our football family and the wider community."
The post also said: "Our love, thoughts and prayers are with Paul, Lisa, Mitch's wider family, his friends and everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. We cannot begin to imagine the pain they are going through, but we hope they find some comfort in knowing just how many people care and how deeply Mitch was loved."
The inquest was adjourned to a later date.
