Russell Brand, convicted of rape and sexual assault, saved one victim's phone number under a coded nickname in his contacts. The entry used the single letter "T," which he said stood for "tart," along with "AP" and two asterisks.
Court Evidence Details Coded Contact
The 51-year-old comedian's phone entry was uncovered during a forensic examination of his iPhone 5. It became a significant part of his evidence at Southwark Crown Court. Brand explained that "AP" stood for "anal play," referring to an encounter he claimed happened backstage at the Hammersmith Apollo in London in 2009.
He told jurors the two asterisks were a reminder never to forget the encounter, saying: "Never, ever forget this individual, this is a memorable encounter."
Conviction and Other Charges
The woman, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, was 21 when she met Brand, then 33, after one of his stand-up performances. She alleged he later raped her anally at his north London home despite her repeatedly telling him to stop. Brand denied the allegation, insisting it was consensual, but the jury found him guilty.
The verdict was one of four guilty findings against the former television and radio presenter. He was also convicted of three counts of sexual assault involving other women, and cleared of two further rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
Prosecution Questions and Sentencing
Prosecutors questioned Brand about the letters and symbols, challenging why he had not mentioned the contact entry during his police interview in July 2025. He had previously told police he could not remember the woman or the alleged incident, later claiming his recollection had developed over time.
The case involved allegations by six women relating to incidents between 1999 and 2009. Brand, who has consistently denied wrongdoing, was remanded in custody following the verdicts. His wife Laura Gallacher left court within seconds of the conviction. He is due to be sentenced at Southwark Crown Court on November 9.
