French authorities have launched an inquiry after the remains of five infants were discovered inside cardboard boxes at a property in Orange, south-east France.
The investigation was initiated following the birth of a child on Monday evening to a woman born in 1994, who had reportedly experienced her third case of "pregnancy denial".
Hospital personnel in Orange reported the situation to the authorities. The woman's husband reportedly searched through boxes at their residence, uncovered the initial remains, and brought the body to the hospital, prompting staff to notify police, reports The Mirror.
Upon searching the couple's home in the Vaucluse department, police officers uncovered further foetal remains wrapped in plastic bags and stored inside cardboard boxes, according to sources cited by French newspaper Le Parisien.
The couple are parents to two other children, aged eight and 12. The mother remains in hospital care and has not been placed under arrest.
