Baby dies in Warwickshire; two arrested and bailed

Police have issued an update after a one-year-old girl died in Atherstone, Warwickshire, on Friday. A 19-year-old woman and a 21-year-old man were arrested at the scene and have now been bailed with strict conditions while enquiries continue.

Arrests and investigation

Officers were called to Long Street at around 11.50am on Friday following reports of a child in cardiac arrest at a home. The girl died despite the best efforts of medics.

The two suspects were initially arrested on suspicion of child neglect and were later further arrested on suspicion of causing or allowing the death of a child. Warwickshire Police said in an update today that they have been bailed while enquiries continue.

Police appeal for information

Detective Chief Inspector Martyn Kendall from the Major Investigation Unit said: “This tragic death has understandably caused a great deal of shock and concern in the local community.”

“The two suspects arrested have now been bailed with strict conditions. We are waiting for a post mortem which will help us shed more light on the circumstances leading up to her death.”

“In the meantime, our detectives are working around the clock to gather evidence and I’d urge anyone with information that could help with our enquiries to get in touch.”
