Devon and Cornwall Police have confirmed that a murder investigation has been launched following the death of former MP and MEP Ann Widdecombe. The 78-year-old was found dead with serious injuries at her home in Dartmoor on Thursday morning.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has urged the public not to speculate, describing the circumstances as “extremely distressing”. Ms Widdecombe, a former prisons minister for the Conservatives, later served as a Brexit Party MEP and a Reform UK spokeswoman. She also gained fame outside politics after appearing on Strictly Come Dancing.
