An inquest into the death of former Conservative minister and Reform UK spokesperson Ann Widdecombe will be opened at County Hall in Exeter at 10am on Tuesday. The 78-year-old was found dead at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor, Devon, on July 9, having suffered serious injuries.
Police Investigation and Arrest
A 28-year-old white British man was arrested on suspicion of her murder on July 11 and remains in police custody. Two days after the murder arrest, counter-terrorism police took over the investigation, further arresting the man on suspicion of the commission, preparation or instigation of acts of terrorism. Police believe Widdecombe was the victim of a targeted attack the day before her body was found.
Legal Time Limits
Terrorism laws allow a suspect to be held for up to seven days initially, with investigators able to apply for extensions up to 14 days total. It is understood the initial seven-day period expires on Monday evening.
