Two Teens Arrested After Cyclist Pushed from Bike in Newcastle

A cyclist is fighting for his life after being pushed from a bike in Newcastle city centre. Two police cordons were put in place following the incident on Thursday night, one on Claremont Road and the other in Walker Park.

Incident Details

Emergency services were called to Claremont Road in Newcastle at around 5:10 PM on Thursday. It was reported that a cyclist was approached by two people on a moped, and one of them pushed the man from the bike. The man, aged in his 50s, remains in hospital in a life-threatening condition after suffering serious head injuries.

A police cordon was still in place on Claremont Road this morning, from the junction of Barras Bridge and Great North Road to the roundabout for Queen Victoria Road and Park Terrace. A second police cordon has been in place within Walker Park, off Scrogg Road, relating to the Claremont Road incident. ChronicleLive understands a large group of people were gathered at the park last night where the arrests were made, with one resident describing the situation as 'chaos'.

Emergency Services Response

Northumbria Police attended the initial incident and were also present at Walker Park. The North East Ambulance Service was only called to Claremont Road. A spokesperson for the North East Ambulance Service said: 'We were called to an incident on Claremont Road, Newcastle at 5:05 PM on June 11. We dispatched a double crewed ambulance and one patient was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary.' The National Police Air Service helicopter was also in attendance.

Arrests Made

Two teenage boys, aged 16 and 14, have been arrested on suspicion of wounding with intent to commit grievous bodily harm. The arrests were made at Walker Park around an hour after the initial incident on Claremont Road. ChronicleLive has been in Walker Park this morning, where several residents spoke about issues with antisocial behaviour after dark.

A spokesperson for Northumbria Police said that officers are particularly keen to hear from people who may have dashcam footage of the incident on Claremont Road, adding: 'Witnesses, or anyone with information, should send police a direct message on social media or use the live chat and report forms on the Force's website.
