Stefan Sivers, a 35-year-old man from Aberdeen, Scotland, who traveled to Ukraine to fight against Russian forces, is now missing and feared dead, according to the Foreign Office.
Disappearance in Kharkiv Region
Mr. Sivers is reported to have died in the Kharkiv region of Ukraine. He traveled to Ukraine in December 2025 after expressing support for the country on social media since 2022. The Foreign Office confirmed his disappearance, stating: “We are supporting the family of a British national missing in Ukraine and are in contact with the local authorities.”
Background and Social Media Activity
Following the Russian invasion in February 2022, Mr. Sivers' Facebook account featured two selfies with a graphic of the Ukrainian flag. He also posted: “It ain’t 1918 why should man be in the trenches.” His social media indicates he worked in restaurants and had no prior military service, like many foreign fighters in Ukraine.
Foreign Office Warnings
The Foreign Office advises against all travel to Ukraine and notes that British nationals who participate in the conflict face significant risks. “British nationals fighting in Ukraine have been killed or captured,” the FCDO website states. Since 18 May 2024, British nationals joining the International Legion or Ukrainian Armed Forces must serve at least six months and cannot leave Ukraine during that period. The British government’s ability to support such individuals is “very limited” and cannot facilitate departure, medical repatriation, or termination of military contracts.
