Detectives are examining old CCTV footage in connection with the unsolved murder of BBC presenter Jill Dando. Improvements in "CCTV enhancement technology" have enabled investigators to revisit 27-year-old footage from Putney Bridge Underground station, Scotland Yard confirmed.
Footage reviewed after technology advances
The former Crimewatch host was shot dead at the age of 37 outside her Fulham home in west London on April 26 1999. An unidentified individual known as "Man X" was captured on camera near Putney Bridge station, approximately one mile from Ms Dando's home, shortly after the killing.
A motorist had reportedly witnessed a man "running for his life" along Fulham Palace Road at around the time of the shooting, according to the Mirror. She subsequently identified Man X in the station CCTV footage as the individual she had seen sprinting.
Met statement on ongoing inquiries
A Met spokesperson said: "In the 27 years since Jill Dando's murder, the investigation has been subject to numerous reviews, aiming to identify whether matters could be progressed with advances in technology and forensics."
"Recent advancements in CCTV enhancement technology have provided investigators with the opportunity to re-examine original footage from Putney Bridge train station. The review of CCTV footage forms part of ongoing inquiries and should not be interpreted as a significant line of inquiry nor as a new investigation being opened on this matter."
Dando's broadcasting career
Away from her Crimewatch duties, Dando was a familiar face on BBC television throughout the 1980s and 1990s, appearing on programmes including travel show Holiday and The Antiques Inspectors. She started her career as a reporter at her local newspaper The Weston Mercury in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, before joining the morning show Breakfast Time, which subsequently became BBC Breakfast.
