Notorious Australian murderer Bevan Spencer Von Einem has died in prison palliative care, ensuring the grim secrets of one of the country's most chilling crime sagas are buried with him.
A Terminal End Behind Bars
Authorities confirmed that Von Einem passed away this week after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis, which gave him just days to live. He spent his final moments under guard in a prison hospital, never having expressed remorse for his heinous crimes.
Von Einem was sentenced to life imprisonment in 1984 for the abduction, torture, and murder of 15-year-old Richard Kelvin. The teenager, son of prominent Channel 9 newsreader Rob Kelvin, endured a five-week nightmare of captivity in 1983. During this period, he was drugged, subjected to sustained torture, and repeatedly raped before he ultimately died.
Suspected of a String of Teenage Murders
While only convicted for the Kelvin murder, police strongly suspected Von Einem's involvement in the deaths of at least four other teenage boys during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Furthermore, he was a prime suspect in the activities of a depraved group known as 'The Family', which was rumoured to have tortured and killed up to 150 victims in South Australia during that era.
Despite intense police scrutiny and being charged in connection with other teenage killings, these additional cases ultimately collapsed, leaving many questions unanswered. Von Einem maintained his denial of all murders until his dying breath, even callously blaming his young victim, Richard Kelvin, for his own death.
