McCann detective shares new theory on Madeleine's fate

The private detective hired by the McCann family to find missing Madeleine has issued a sobering update on her disappearance, saying he does not know whether she is alive but refusing to abandon the hunt.

Julian Peribañez, who has spent years investigating the case, told the Olive Press: "I don't know if she's alive or not, because hardly anyone on Earth does. But as long as I have hope, I won't stop looking."

Trafficking Network Theory and Appeal for Information

Mr Peribañez has maintained his independent investigations and suspects that Madeleine fell victim to an Eastern European trafficking network. He appealed to residents across the Algarve area with relevant details to come forward.

"If you've had encounters with people who fit the profile, please reach out. All I need is a name. Give me a name, and I'll chase it wherever I have to," he said.

The Night Madeleine Vanished

Madeleine was three years old when she disappeared from her family's ground-floor holiday flat in Praia da Luz, Portugal, during the evening of 3 May 2007. Her parents, Kate and Gerry, had left her alongside her younger twin siblings asleep while they ate at a tapas restaurant approximately 55 metres away, alternating checks on the children during the evening.

Around 10pm, Kate found Madeleine's bed vacant and the bedroom window ajar, sparking a worldwide search that became one of the most prominent, intricate and lengthy police investigations in contemporary times. The multi-agency investigation has resulted in thousands of leads being followed up across Europe, including Scotland Yard's Operation Grange, yet the case remains formally unsolved.

German Investigation into Christian Brueckner

German prosecutors have dedicated years to investigating convicted rapist Christian Brueckner, who was named as the prime suspect in 2020 after phone records positioned him close to the holiday resort on the evening Madeleine vanished. Nevertheless, no murder charges have been filed against him in connection with her disappearance, and the case has consistently ground to a halt amid complicated legal proceedings and separate criminal trials.

Brueckner had faced accusations of carrying out five offences in Portugal between December 2000 and June 2017, with the appeal lodged against four charges. One of the most disturbing allegations involved the rape of an elderly woman, which prosecutors maintained had been recorded on video, but judges determined that the witnesses' accounts of the alleged footage were inadequate to establish what had occurred.
