An inquest into the death of former Conservative minister and MEP Ann Widdecombe will formally begin on Tuesday, July 21, 2026. The 78-year-old was found dead at her home in Haytor on Dartmoor, Devon, on July 9, having suffered what police described as "serious injuries."
Suspect Detained Under Terrorism Act
A 28-year-old white British man arrested on suspicion of her murder on July 11 remains in custody, still being questioned by detectives. Two days after the murder arrest, counter-terrorism police took over the investigation and further arrested the man on suspicion of the commission, preparation, or instigation of acts of terrorism, according to a police statement.
Under terrorism laws, a suspect can be held for up to seven days initially, with investigators permitted to apply for extensions up to 14 days in total. It is understood the initial seven-day period will expire on Monday evening, July 20.
Inquest Hearing Scheduled
A hearing to open the inquest is scheduled for 10 a.m. on Tuesday at County Hall in Exeter. Miss Widdecombe was found dead after what police believe was a "targeted attack" the day before she was discovered.
