Human remains belonging to multiple individuals have been discovered at a property in San Diego, California, which was formerly the residence of a man already in custody on a separate murder charge. The San Diego County District Attorney's Office identified Dwight William Rhone, 74, as a person of interest in the ongoing investigation.
The remains were unearthed by FBI agents, California Highway Patrol, and San Diego police during a cold case homicide investigation at the house on Newton Avenue, where Rhonce once lived as a tenant. Investigators were seen digging in the backyard and recovering what appeared to be bones, according to NBC 7.
Current residents Judith Estrada Gonzalez and her sister were informed of the search warrant on Sunday and have since been relocated to temporary accommodation. The San Diego Police Department stated that detectives will work with the Medical Examiner's Office to identify the remains and determine the cause of death.
Rhone was arrested in December 2023 on a murder charge for the fatal shooting and immolation of Bernardo Moreno, 54, whose body was found in a burned-out car on Interstate 5 in October 2023. He also received a two-year federal prison sentence for firearm and ammunition possession, with prosecutors noting his lengthy criminal history of at least 33 offences between 1963 and 2021.
Rhone remains in custody without bail at San Diego Central Jail and is due in court next week for the 2023 killing.
