Grandmother Suspected of Poisoning Daughter and Four Grandkids

Police in Mechanicville, New York, suspect that a 64-year-old grandmother, Amy Steadman, intentionally poisoned her daughter and four young grandchildren before taking her own life. The grim discovery was made on June 23 after a neighbor requested a welfare check.

Discovery of the Bodies

Officers from the Mechanicville Police Department entered Steadman's apartment after building management unlocked the door. Inside, they found the bodies of Steadman, her daughter Sarah Myers, 44, and Myers' four children. According to NBC News, all six family members were dead. Police Chief William Rabbitt stated that the victims had been dead for an extended period, making initial identification difficult.

Evidence of Poisoning

Authorities recovered numerous prescription and over-the-counter medications from the apartment. Chief Rabbitt said the evidence points to an intentional poisoning. Additionally, one child is believed to have suffered fatal sharp-force injuries. Official causes and manners of death are pending toxicology tests and medical examiner reviews.

Handwritten Note Found

Police also discovered a handwritten note inside the apartment. Chief Rabbitt noted that the note, combined with other evidence, “strongly suggests” Amy Steadman was involved in the deaths. He emphasized: “Other circumstantial evidence strongly suggests that Amy Steadman was involved in the deaths. However, final determination regarding responsibility will be made only after all investigative findings, toxicology results and medical examiner reviews have been completed.” He added there is no evidence of outside involvement.

Family Background

Sarah Myers and her children reportedly lived in another apartment in the same building but were found inside Steadman's home. The children's father lives in Utah. The children were homeschooled and not enrolled in the public school system. The investigation remains ongoing.
