Police have launched an investigation after a suspected cannabis farm ignited in a Gateshead residence, resulting in extensive damage and the evacuation of neighbours. Emergency crews responded to a property on Windsor Avenue in Bensham on Friday evening following reports of a blaze.

A Northumbria Police spokesperson stated: “Just after 7.30pm on Friday (June 5), we were alerted by Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service to a fire at a house on Windsor Avenue in the Bensham area of Gateshead. It was reported that a suspected cannabis farm inside the property was ablaze.

“Emergency services attended, and the fire was extinguished shortly thereafter. No injuries have been reported. Several people were evacuated from neighbouring properties as a precaution and have since returned home.”
