Former North Wales Police detective constable Thomas Coppack has been handed a suspended prison sentence for assaulting a woman. He was found guilty of the assault last month at Mold Crown Court but was cleared of a charge of intentional strangulation.
Sentence and Conditions
On Thursday, August 13, Coppack was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, suspended for 18 months. He was also made the subject of a rehabilitation order, must undertake 80 hours of unpaid work, and pay £1,000 costs. The court imposed a restraining order for three years.
Resignation and Misconduct Hearing
Coppack resigned from North Wales Police after being found guilty. Deputy chief constable Nigel Harrison said: "We acknowledge today's sentence. As part of our formal processes, the former officer will now be subject to a misconduct hearing."
Harrison added: "As I have previously stated, this type of conduct can seriously undermine public trust and confidence, but I hope this case demonstrates to victims of violence against women and girls that when they come forward, they will be listened to and supported. We will not shy away from prosecuting those that commit such crimes."
