Brother of Calais Campbell Charged with Mother's Murder

Police have charged the brother of Baltimore Ravens defensive lineman Calais Campbell with murder after their 71-year-old mother was found dead in an Atlanta home during a welfare check.

Details of the Incident

According to arrest warrants, Nateal Campbell's throat had been cut, and officers found Ciarre Campbell in possession of a knife. Police responded to a welfare call at around 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday and discovered Nateal Campbell unresponsive, a police statement said.

Ciarre Campbell was booked into the Fulton County jail and had an initial court hearing scheduled for Wednesday morning. He faces charges including aggravated assault and murder. Online court records did not list an attorney who could comment on the charges.

Family Statement

The Campbell family released a statement asking for privacy while coping with what they described as "overwhelming grief." The statement read: "We are devastated to share that the Campbell Family has lost its matriarch, Mrs Nateal Campbell. While the details of her passing are still being investigated, we take comfort in knowing she is reunited with our father, her beloved Chuck, and in the arms of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ."

Calais Campbell's Career

Calais Campbell, 39, is entering his 19th NFL season after signing a one-year, $5.5 million contract with the Baltimore Ravens in April. A former Miami Hurricane, he was a second-round pick by the Arizona Cardinals in 2008 and spent 10 seasons there before also playing for Jacksonville, Atlanta, and Miami. He has 117 career sacks in 278 games (259 starts), was a first-team AP All-Pro selection in 2017, and has been voted to the Pro Bowl six times.
