Body Found in River Taw Believed to Be Missing Teen Taylor Charlton

Police investigating the disappearance of 15-year-old Taylor Charlton have discovered a body in the River Taw near Sticklepatch, Devon, describing it as a 'significant development' that brings them closer to answering difficult questions for the family.

Discovery and Police Statement

Inspector Andy Wills of Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the find on June 24, prompted by a call from a member of the public. Speaking at a press conference in Exeter, he stated: 'It's a significant development for us. It certainly moves us a step closer to answering some really difficult questions, in particular for Taylor's loved ones.' He added that the force suspects the body is Taylor, based on the direction of travel when he was last seen and the circumstances of the find.

Search Challenges

The search operation involved over 100 officers and was hampered by challenging terrain and the highly tidal estuary of the River Taw. The Bristol Channel has the second highest tidal range in the world, creating low visibility and difficult conditions. Inspector Wills noted: 'It's really difficult, one of the main search areas has been the river Torridge which flows into the estuary of the River Taw.' Resources included dive teams, sonar-equipped boats, and air and land-based search teams.

Community Support

Inspector Wills praised the local community for raising awareness 'far and wide across the country,' stating: 'It's been incredible to see communities come together... to communicate information about Taylor's disappearance, which has travelled far and wide and certainly across the country, people are aware about this internationally.' He urged the public to avoid speculation and respect the family's privacy as they process the news.
