K-pop influencer Mina Chan, 26, died during a TikTok livestream after being subjected to harassment by fans of the boy band ENHYPEN. The Japanese social media star, who ran the account sweeter_nk with over 300,000 followers, had been a vocal supporter of the group.
Backlash over concert behavior
In the days before her death, ENHYPEN fans accused Mina of trying to overshadow one of the band's concerts. She had attended a show in the United States in late July, bringing flowers for members Sunoo and Ni-Ki. She handed the bouquet to Sunoo to pass to Ni-Ki.
Days later, Ni-Ki appeared on a livestream and discussed concert etiquette without naming Mina. He said: "Everywhere we go there are a few people who really want us to notice them." Fans quickly targeted Mina, blaming her for upsetting the band.
Apology and account closure
As backlash grew, Mina issued an apology, writing: "I feel like my actions ended up taking advantage of Sunoo's kindness. I'm truly sorry. I feel so apologetic toward Sunoo and all the Sunoo fans." She admitted to deluding herself into thinking she was closer to the members than she was, and expressed regret over her behavior in America. She then announced she was closing her account.
Death and investigation
According to South Korean news agency Yonhap, police received a report at 5:33am on August 5 about a woman in her 20s attempting suicide during a TikTok livestream. The next day, Mina's younger sister confirmed her death, writing: "My beloved older sister, who was always kind and warm to everyone she met, has passed away. I kindly ask that you keep my sister in your thoughts and prayers."
Seoul's Yongsan Police Station is investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. The Mirror has contacted representatives for the band and TikTok for comment.
