Asylum seeker hunted over Jamey Carney murder in Ireland

Ahmad Al-Saqar, 28, is at the centre of an international manhunt after the murder of Jamey Carney, 43, in her home in Killarney, Co Kerry, on Tuesday, July 7, 2026. Insiders claim his appeal against a rejected asylum bid was highly unlikely to succeed, with a source telling The Irish Sun on Sunday: "The reality was he was going to be ordered to leave the country very soon."

Details of the murder and manhunt

Ms Carney's body was discovered by her daughter on Wednesday afternoon. Police believe she was killed in a jealous rage on Tuesday night. Al-Saqar, who claimed to be Palestinian, arrived in Ireland in 2024 and struck up a relationship with Ms Carney. He had applied for asylum but was turned down and had appealed the decision.

Officers believe Al-Saqar took an overnight bus to Dublin city centre on Wednesday morning, then a cab to the airport, leaving before 11am on a flight to Istanbul, Turkey, using his own passport. The Irish Government has contacted foreign officials, and Interpol is leading the effort to track him down.

Victim's background and family response

Jamey Carney, originally from New York, moved to Killarney in 2021. She is survived by her 13-year-old daughter, Michaela. Her sister, Devon Bennett, has started a GoFundMe to help with travel, accommodation, legal fees, and funeral costs. In a post online, Devon said: "My sister, Jamey Noel Carney, was murdered in Killarney, Kerry, Ireland on Tuesday, July 7th 2026. She is survived by her brilliant 13-year-old daughter Michaela."

Devon added: "Jamey was an insanely caring human being who dedicated so much of herself, her energy, and her time to fighting for the rights of others." She and her mother are now in Ireland working with Garda and social services to ensure Michaela can remain in the country she loves.

Impact and ongoing investigation

The murder has shocked the local community in Killarney. Gardaí are continuing their investigation, and the international manhunt for Al-Saqar remains active. The GoFundMe page has been set up to support the family during this difficult time.
