At least nine people, including two children, have died after a freight train crashed into a bus at a railway crossing in southern Zimbabwe. The collision occurred on Tuesday in Triangle, a sugar-producing town in Masvingo Province.
Details of the Crash
Police and rail authorities confirmed that the bus was attempting to cross the tracks when it was struck by the train. Andrew Kanambura, spokesperson for the National Railways of Zimbabwe, stated that the bus driver failed to observe level crossing rules, which require drivers to stop and check for oncoming trains before proceeding. Nine passengers died at the scene, including seven adults and two minors. At least 25 other passengers were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
Emergency Response and Investigation
Emergency services arrived at the scene shortly after the crash. Authorities have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. The Zimbabwe Republic Police reported the accident occurred at 0843 hours along Mbizi Road in Triangle, involving a Makuku Bus traveling from Chikombedzi to Masvingo.
In a statement on X, the police said: "The ZRP reports a fatal road traffic accident which occurred at 0843 hours this morning along Mbizi Road in Triangle, Masvingo Province when Makuku Bus traveling from Chikombedzi to Masvingo collided with a goods train at a rail-level crossing. Nine people are confirmed dead while 26 victims were injured. More details will be availed soon as police officers are still attending to the accident."
Recent Transport Incidents in Zimbabwe
This tragedy comes less than a week after another fatal transport incident in Zimbabwe, when a minibus carrying schoolchildren caught fire in the country's central region, killing seven children. Road crashes are common in Zimbabwe; according to the country's road safety agency, a traffic accident occurs every 15 minutes on average, with five people killed and 38 injured each day.
