The Met Office has issued fresh severe weather warnings for heavy rain and thunderstorms across the UK, with some areas expected to experience up to 54 hours of miserable conditions. Yellow warnings are in place from today through Thursday, covering Northern Ireland, large parts of England, Scotland, and Wales.
Today's yellow thunderstorm warnings apply to Northern Ireland, the South West, and South East of England from noon to 9pm. Meanwhile, a separate rain warning covers a vast area from London and the East of England, extending across the Midlands to Newcastle. Similar rain warnings are in effect for England and Scotland on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Met Office warns that some communities may be cut off due to flooding, with sudden downpours causing disruptions to train and bus services. Lightning strikes could also lead to power cuts. Forecasters predict 30-40 mm of rain widely, with up to 60-80 mm in some areas, and a small chance of 100-150 mm over upland regions.
Wednesday's warning states: 'An area of rain is expected to develop across eastern and central England and then move northwestwards to affect northern England and north Wales during Wednesday afternoon. The area of rain could then become slow moving, heavy and persistent.' The warning remains in place from midnight to 6am on Thursday for England, and from 12pm to 6pm on Wednesday for Scotland.
Thunderstorm warnings also highlight the risk of hail and frequent lightning, with accumulations of 20-30 mm in an hour possible. The public is advised to stay updated on the latest forecasts as the situation develops.
