Wales minister to unveil M4 and Menai Strait crossing plans

Wales' transport minister Mark Hooper will make two announcements today (October 6) about road projects in Wales. He will set out the Welsh Government's plans to ease congestion for the M4 around Newport and the Menai Strait crossings.

Statement to the Senedd

His statement to the Senedd is due to start at around 3.30pm after the weekly First Minister's Questions session with Rhun ap Iorwerth, which will be covered live. No details about what Mr Hooper is proposing have been released in advance.

Manifesto promise and campaign stance

In its manifesto the party promised to "renew the process of developing solutions to improve the resilience of transport links across the Menai Strait and address congestion on the M4 around Newport". During the campaign, party leader Rhun ap Iorwerth told a WalesOnline election debate that his party would put a plan together.

In response to readers' questions about easing congestion, Mr ap Iorwerth said: "We believe that a response is needed to improve traffic on the M4 around the Brynglas Tunnels. Currently we don't have a plan. What a Plaid Cymru government would do is put that plan together, starting to build the cases and making the case."

He was clear that while he was in favour of investing in rail, he did not believe this alone would resolve the congestion issues on the motorway and said he was looking at a "roads-based solution". He later said he wanted to "unclog that Brynglas bottleneck".
