Thousands of UK drivers have been warned to stop driving their vehicles due to a potential fire risk, following a major safety recall by manufacturer Stellantis. The recall affects popular brands including Peugeot, Jeep, Fiat, Citroen and Vauxhall, with an estimated 44,000 cars involved. The issue relates to a potential problem with the clearance between the gasoline particulate filter pipe and the belt starter generator (BSG), which could lead to a fire.
During an appearance on BBC’s Morning Live, presenter Louise Minchin urged motorists to act promptly. She reassured viewers that the risk of fire is very small but stressed the importance of checking if a vehicle is affected. “Don’t panic,” she said, “but it is a particularly large recall.” She highlighted that recent research suggests 72% of recalled cars are still on the road, meaning many drivers may be unaware of the danger.
Stellantis has confirmed it will contact affected owners by letter, email or phone. However, Minchin warned that second-hand buyers or those who have moved house might not receive notifications. She advised using the manufacturer’s website, such as Vauxhall’s, by entering the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) found in the logbook. Alternatively, the Government’s online checker tool allows checks using a car’s registration number or make, model and year.
The fix involves replacing the pole protection cup of the 48V belt starter generator with one offering higher insulation, and adjusting the clearance if needed. The service takes approximately 30 minutes and is free of charge, regardless of the car’s age, owner or warranty status. Minchin stressed that ignoring a recall could have financial consequences: “If your car is subject to a recall and something happens, your insurance might be invalidated.” She concluded by urging motorists not to ignore recall messages, as the issue can be resolved quickly and safely.
