Union Pacific Train Derailment in Texas Town Results in Ethanol Leak, No Injuries Reported
More than two dozen cars from a Union Pacific train derailed early Wednesday morning in a Texas town near Houston, leading to an ethanol leak from two of the cars. Officials have stated that the incident did not pose any threat to the public, and no injuries were reported.
Details of the Derailment and Leak
The derailment occurred around 5 a.m. CDT in Richmond, a town with approximately 13,000 residents located about 30 miles southwest of Houston. According to Union Pacific spokesperson Robynn Tysver, there were no injuries as a result of the accident.
Fort Bend County Fire Marshal Justin Jurek reported that two of the derailed cars began leaking ethanol after the derailment. Both leaks were subsequently contained. Ethanol, which is typically produced from corn and often used as a fuel additive, did not present a current danger to the public. Jurek emphasized that air monitoring was ongoing as a precautionary measure, and there was no need for evacuations at the time.
Additional Leaks and Traffic Impact
In addition to the ethanol leaks, officials noted that a third derailed car leaked corn syrup. Tysver confirmed that this leak was also contained. The derailment caused significant traffic delays for several hours in Richmond and the nearby area of Rosenberg, as multiple railroad crossings were blocked. Traffic began to clear up once these crossings were reopened.
Cleanup and Investigation Efforts
There is no specific timeframe for how long the cleanup process might take, but Union Pacific is working diligently to address the situation. Tysver stated that the company is "working as safely and as efficiently as possible to clean up the site and reopen the crossings." She also mentioned that the incident is currently under investigation to determine the cause of the derailment.
The response from local and company officials has been coordinated to ensure public safety and minimize disruption. While the ethanol and corn syrup leaks were contained quickly, ongoing monitoring and cleanup efforts are in place to prevent any further issues.
