Stirling, the Scottish city often overshadowed by Glasgow and Edinburgh, has been named the best place to visit in the UK for 2026 by Time Out. The accolade comes as low-cost rail operator Lumo prepares to launch a direct service from London Euston this spring, with five daily trains calling at 11 stops including Stirling.
Lumo, known for its budget fares, will introduce the route in May, marking the first direct connection between London and three stations: Whifflet, Greenfaulds and Larbert. Zoe Adjey, senior lecturer at the University of East London's Institute of Tourism and Hospitality, said tickets would 'certainly be cheaper' than existing LNER services, making Stirling more accessible.
Stirling was praised for its 'immense historical sights' and 'access to extraordinary natural landscapes'. Key attractions include Stirling Castle, perched on a volcanic rock, the Wallace Monument, and the Old Town with its cobbled streets and guided walking tours. The Battle of Bannockburn Visitor Centre and Blair Drummond Safari Park are also nearby.
Outdoor enthusiasts can explore the Ochil Hills for hiking or visit Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park, a short drive away. Traditional pubs such as Nicky Tams, the Curly Coo and the Settle Inn offer a taste of Scottish hospitality. With the smallest population of any Scottish city, Stirling is described as an 'underrated gem' ideal for a relaxed city break.
