UK Tourists Warned of Flight Cancellations Across Six Hotspots

British holidaymakers are being urged to prepare for potential flight cancellations this summer, as ministers warn of jet fuel supply shortages linked to tensions in Iran. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander is expected to 'level with' the public this weekend about the likelihood of disruption, outlining contingency measures to minimise fallout.

Government officials have identified six tourist hotspots at risk of cancellations: Vietnam, Pakistan, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Myanmar and Ethiopia. The warning comes as airline bosses report concerns over fuel supplies, with the UK holding just 34 days' worth of jet fuel reserves according to UKOilWatch.

Roughly three-quarters of Europe's jet fuel originates from the Middle East and passes through the Strait of Hormuz off Iran. Lufthansa Group plans to axe 20,000 flights over six months to conserve fuel, while Virgin Atlantic has introduced a fuel surcharge and British Airways warns of potential 'pricing adjustments'.

Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer suggested Brits might need to reconsider 'where they go on holiday'. Michael O'Leary, chief executive of Ryanair, told The Times that competitors are 'desperately' hunting for flights to axe, with cancellations expected within weeks. Leading fuel suppliers warn that mid-to-late June could see disruptions if the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.

Jet2 reported a 6.2% rise in summer bookings but noted a trend towards last-minute reservations due to the conflict. The company confirmed strong protection against fuel cost increases for the summer period.
