Astley Street in Tyldesley will be closed to traffic for more than a fortnight as work continues on a new travel hub for the guided busway. The closure will run from Monday, August 31 to Monday, September 14, according to Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM).
Essential utility works and diversion routes
TfGM said the closure was needed to 'allow essential utility works as part of the new Tyldesley travel hub'. Diversion routes will be signed during the road closure. The road will be shut at its point just north of the guided busway.
Expansion plans and new facilities
Work on the hub started in March this year. The project will create 148 extra park and ride spaces for vehicles, new lighting and CCTV, office space for guided busway staff, and street improvements to Astley Street, Wareing Street and Johnson Street South.
A letter from TfGM to nearby residents said: "As part of the next phase of construction, Astley Street will be closed to vehicles immediately north of the guided busway from August 31 to September 14."
The current works will see the existing Astley Street park and ride, which provides 46 spaces and three disabled bays, given a new designated pick up and drop off area, two extra accessible car parking spaces, covered cycle parking and delivery lockers.
Completion expected by summer 2026
When planning permission for the project was approved in September 2025, TfGM estimated work was 'expected complete by the summer' of 2026. At that time, Jo Platt, MP for Leigh and Atherton, said: "It's brilliant to see the Tyldesley park and ride and travel hub project moving forward.
"With more than triple the current parking capacity, this development will significantly improve access to public transport and ease the parking pressures in Tyldesley town centre."
TfGM said the expansion was a response to concerns from the local community about parking linked to the Busway.
